Women's woodwork classes

6-week introductory course suitable for beginners to learn basics and hobbyists to freshen up in small, personalised class.

During the six weeks you will learn several basic carpentry techniques (measuring, hammering, nailing, sawing, planning and chiselling) and an introduction to the machinery in the workshop (including power drill, electric table saw etc).

By the end of the 6-weeks you will have made at least one wooden object (e.g., candle holder or anything you can think of) which consolidates and extends all of the skills acquired in previous weeks. Our aim is that all our participants will feel confident to move forward and attempt more complex woodwork projects.

We are proud to say that all women who complete the 6-week course have come back and made an array of items wonderful wooden items (planters, tables, tv units, shelves, umbrella holder – see Instagram @woodthatworks)

Our 2 hour weekly sessions can be booked in 6-week blocks. All tools and materials are supplied.

Classes cost £30 per session and introductory course can be started at any time there is space.

We may be able to offer free or reduced cost spaces to women on low-income or benefits. If you would like to find out about the availability of these spaces please email woodthatworkslondon@gmail.com

Timetable

After School Classes - weekly classes are 1 hour and 10 minutes and are suitable for 8 years old and above. Children learn basic carpentry skills using a variety of real hand tools and machinery (drill, scrollsaws). Rest assured, we’ve been doing this for 15 years and even young children enjoy rising to the challenge of working with real tools and there’s never been more than a splinter to write home about. Classes are mostly non-prescribed so children can use their imaginations, think creatively, work methodically and develop problem solving skills whilst gaining practical skills and having fun.

All tools and materials are supplied. Classes cost £15 per session and we may be able to offer free or reduced cost spaces to children from families on low-income or benefits. If you would like to find out about the availability of these spaces please email woodthatworkslondon@gmail.com.

Note: These sessions are very popular and oversubscribed. A failure to attend without payment or prior notification of 24 hours will lead to your child’s place being offered to someone else.

In 2020 I was doing a stressful full time job, home schooling and caring for my elderly mother. I became increasingly anxious and burnt out. Discovering Wood That Works was a lifeline. I found the sessions therapeutic and calming. I also discovered how much Iove carpentry. The facilitators gently encourage and build confidence and the other women provide encouragement and companionship. I was at my lowest ebb when I started. I can quite honestly say that Wood That Works enormously helped my recovery and continues to keep me stable. Building communities has never been so important and this organisation is really special.
